Maths

Autumn 1 - Week 1

This week in Maths we have been practising our counting skills.

We have focussed on the number 5 and have represented it in different ways.

We have counted to 5, shown 5 fingers, drawn 5 objects, counted 5 objects and recognised the differences between patterns of 5.

Autumn 1 - Week 2

This week in Maths we have been helping Owl to pack his suitcase ready to stay at his Aunties house. We have helped Owl to count all of the items he needs to take with him and checked them with the list he left us. We recognised that there were 15 items altogether and matched the correct numerals to the amounts.  We then discussed how many items we would need if we went for twice as long.

Autumn 1 - Week 3

This week in Maths we have been concentrating on our counting and recognising numbers. We have used objects to help us count and then match to the correct numeral. We have done this by sorting our resources into containers and stock counting them. We have then introduced shapes, sorting them into containers, beginning to recognise their properties; number of sides, corners, shape names and whether their sides are straight or curved.

Autumn 1 - Week 4

This week in Maths we have continued our learning on number recognition. This week we have used a dice to look at the different ways numbers can be shown and how we can use more than one dice for calculations, adding 2 numbers together. We have been able to show numbers in lots of different ways; using patterns, drawings, written numbers, using our hands and using calculations.

Autumn 1 - Week 5

This week there has been no adult-led Maths sessions due to our Maths assessments. The children have each completed a 1:1 maths assessment focussing on number, shape, space and measure.

Autumn 1 - Week 6

This week in Maths we have been playing a game of Incey Wincey spider to help us count and recognise the numerals on a dice. We acted as the Incey Wincey spider and climbed up the drainpipe. We then threw the dice to determine how many steps we could take up or down the drainpipe. We counted the steps together and recognised how many more steps we would need to win and what number we would need to roll next. We then created our very own game to practise our counting skills using objects and a dice. The first player to fill their grid with objects won! We had lots of fun.

Autumn 1 - Week 7

In Maths this week we have been continuing our learning of counting, however, counting actions and objects that do not move. We started by reading the book 'Maisie goes camping', helping Maisie to count in and out the animals of the tent. We used problem solving skills to work out what we would need to do if there were too many animals - or not enough animals in the tent. We then recreated the story ourselves by creating tents inside and outside of the classroom, counting our friends in and out of the tents until they became a squash and a squeeze! We also used objects and books to recreate the story and counted animals into our own tents!

Autumn 1 - Week 8

This week we created our very own number books to show our learning of numbers and counting so far. We created our books by collecting the number of objects from inside and outside needed to represent the numerals and sticking them to a sheet to count them. We created pages in our book for numbers 5, 7 and 10. We used objects such as;

  • paper
  • creative materials- tinfoil, feather, matchsticks
  • sticks
  • acorns
  • bark
