This year both Year One classes have had a real focus on Phonics. As well as our daily phonics session, some children have been getting up early and coming to extra sessions before school, plus developing their skills both in class as well as at home with parents and families.
In mid-June all Year 1 children undertake the national Phonics Screening Check, when they are asked to read 40 words which are a mixture of real and 'alien' words - pseudo words which children are asked to sound out and blend, using their phonic knowledge. To be able to successfully pass the test, children need to be secure at Phase 3 and Phase 5 of Phonics. All children have worked hard this year to develop their phonics, reading and writing, and we are looking forward to applying to what we have learnt and having a go at the 2014 real and alien words.
