Summer Term Topic: The Seaside

Our topic for the Summer Term will be the Seaside. We have lots of exciting learning opportunities planned around this theme. Have a look below to see what exciting things we will be doing in each subject area this term:

Art: Creating whale pictures, using fluorescent paints to create sea urchin pictures, creating a seaside window display, using our hands and feet to create pictures, using pastels to create turtle pictures, creating collages, using watercolours and oil pastels and creating an aquarium.

Design & Technology: Learning about Punch and Judy, creating their own puppet, testing different flavour ice creams, designing and making their own ice lollies, creating packaging for their ice lollies and pitching their product to others, making chips and making sandwiches for a picnic.

Geography: Locating UK seaside towns, recognising physical and human features, comparing the seaside and Worksop and debating where they would prefer to live, using aerial photographs, learning about seaside locations around the world and creating their own maps.

History: Learning about holidays in the past, comparing beachwear from the past and now, learning about promenades, understanding the purpose of a lighthouse and creating our own lighthouse out of clay and creating an advertisement for a Victorian holiday.

ICT: The children will be learning a variety of ICT skills throughout all the subject areas. This term we will be focusing on using simple apps on the ipads.

Literacy: Recognising aspects of fairy tales, looking at a variety of fairy tales and traditional tales, seaside poetry and seaside stories such as the Light Keepers Lunch.

Maths: In Summer Term 1 we will be looking at the following areas of Maths: Adding and subtracting single digit numbers to two digit numbers, finding 10 more and 10 less, using known number facts to help in additions, adding three small numbers, comparing weights of objects and finding halves of numbers.

Music: Using sound apps on the ipads, creating and recording sounds using the ipads, creating musical sequences using instruments, making our own musical instruments, creating a seaside dance and performing it to another class and drawing a seaside picture based on a piece of music.

Religious Education (RE): Learning about the features of a Christian Church and understanding Jewish stories.

Science: We will be doing lots of fun investigations in Science this term. In Summer 1 we will be doing investigations with water e.g. floating and sinking and freezing experiments. In Summer 2 we will be doing investigations with materials such as looking at objects falling and rolling and building houses out of different materials to test their strength.

Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL): Working as a group to create characters and acting out their own story, creating towers out of marshmallows and spaghetti in groups, working in groups to create a large scale seaside picture, developing thinking skills by thinking of presents for story characters and thinking of creative uses for everyday objects.
