This week we have really enjoyed our Karate lesson with Sensei Dave. We learnt to do a Roundhouse kick and played the bouncing game.
Monday 2nd July
On Monday we went to Creswell Crags as part of our Stone Age topic. When we arrived we put on hard hats and head torches and went on a cave tour. We learnt about the cave people that would have lived in the caves and looked at the tools they would have used. We then took part in a Cave Art activity and used a range of tools to create art work. We then had a go at building a den using sticks and animal furs and tried throwing spears as if we were hunting. Finally we had a tour of the museum and looked at a number of special artefacts before getting the bus home.
Tuesday 26th June
Today we have taken part in SMSC Day. We learnt about Islam and used the morning to research facts about Islam. We learnt about the Five Pillars and researched ten facts about Islam. We then decorated our own paper prayer mats and came up with our own five rules to Be The Best We Can Be.
Today we enjoyed 'Dino Day'. We came to school in dinosaur themed clothes or non-uniform and spent the day doing dinosaur activities. First we made T-rex feet out of paper plates, we then used card to create a Triceratops mask. Once our feet and masks were dry we wore them to do the 'Dino Stomp', a dinosaur themed dance. After lunch we followed a trail of dinosaur footprints that led us to some buried fossilised bones of a dinosaur! We had to use our identification sheets to see of we could work out which dinosaur the remains belonged to; it was a Spinosaurus!
This week in Maths we have been looking at collecting data in a tally chart. We went round the class and found out information such as, peoples favourite colours, favourite animals and favourite video game. We then used the data we had collected in our tally chart to create a pictogram and a bar chart.
This week in English we have been using iPads to research facts about dinosaurs. We recorded this information and created a report about our best dinosaur facts. We then presented our reports to the rest of the class and focused on using loud, clear voices.
This week in Maths we have been looking at multiplication. We have been practising using our mental methods and times tables knowledge to work out multiplication number problems. We then moved on to solving word problems and using a multiplication grid.
Monday 23rd April
This week we have been visited by 'Fuze' the coding company. We participated in a school assembly and then took part in a class workshop. We really enjoyed exploring how changing codes altered what happened on our screens.
We have a number of exciting activities planned for this summer term. Our topic this term is the Stoneage. We will be exploring the food, tools, past times and lifestyles of people from the Stoneage.
English: In English, this term our focus text will be on our class book 'The Tales of Despereaux'. We will be using this book in most of our English lessons to inspire our writing. We are focusing on the content of our writing and using a number of different writing techniques on a range of different text types. We will continue to focus on improving our spelling, using punctuation correctly, using paragraphs to group our writing and using a range of vocabulary.
Maths: In Maths, we will be furthering our understanding of place value by adding one, two and three digit numbers. We will also be looking at using mental addition, subtraction and multiplication methods, adding and subtracting fractions, measuring and problem solving.
History/Geography: We will be looking at Cavemen and Dinosaurs in our History and Geography lessons, focusing on the timeline of the Stone Age and how the landscape has altered throughout the Stone Age.
Computing: We will be looking at continuing to develop our coding knowledge this term as well as gaining basic computer skills when using programmes such as PowerPoint and Excel.
Science: Our Science topic for the first half term is Rocks and Fossils. We will be looking at the different types of rocks and fossils, how they are formed and how they can be used to help us to understand more about the world and its history.
Art/DT: This term, we will be continuing our graphic design lessons each week run by Mr Slaney.
Music: We will continue to have band sessions each Friday with Mr Bellingham and Mr Oakton to develop our skills in playing different instruments, composing music and developing our singing skills.
French: We will be having weekly French sessions each Thursday with Madame Walsh to continue to develop our skills in reading, writing and speaking French.
RE/PSHE: This term, we will be having two RE/PSHE days. We will be learning all about Sikhism in the first half term and learning abour 'Living in the Wider World' in the second half term.
Physical Education: This term, we will continue to have PE sessions each Thursday with Mr Scott. We will also have weekly Karate Sessions with Sensei Dave each Wednesday.
Venture Experts: Children will continue to have their chosen venture experts sessions on Tuesday afternoons until the end of the summer term.
Summer Term Performance: We will be taking part in the Key Stage 2 performance of Peter Pan. We will be learning songs and dances to perform in the play.
This week we have also enjoyed a visit from the NSPCC. They told us all about 'Speak out and Stay Safe' and what to do if we are worried about anything. We watched a lot of interesting videos about other children and discussed who we can talk to.
This week in Maths we have been looking at using our knowledge of place value and number to add two and three digit numbers using mental methods. We have then applied this knowledge to using both compact and expanded column method.

Art and DT Day
Today we have taken part in Art and DT Day. We looked at a few different artists and discussed how different artists have different styles just like we all have different styles of handwriting. We then made some Easter Cards to take home.
Safer Internet Day
Today we have taken part on Safer Internet Day. Miss Jackson came to speak to us all about using the internet safely. We watched some really interesting videos and discussed what the person in the video was doing well to stay safe online and what they could do to be even more safe online. We also thought about all the times we use the internet and games and how we can use these safely to have fun.
History Around the World Day
Today we have taken part in a History Around the World Day. We learnt about the colonisation of Australia and learnt about the Aboriginal People. We learnt; when and how Australia become colonised, what impact this had on Aboriginal people and their culture and about Aboriginal art and dance. We really enjoyed our day especially when we got to create our own dances to the music of the Didgeridoo!
Make Do and Blog
This week we have taken part in a blogging competition. We have created Robin Hood themed outfits, designed them, added special features, and created a college with different materials. Once we were happy with our designs we wrote a story based around our outfits. Head over to our class blog page to read them!
This week in science we have been looking at forces and what forces are acting on objects. We looked at friction and gravity thinking about how these two forces would affect the movement of a car. We then looked at water resistance and created our own boats out of foil and experimented to see how much weight these boats could hold and how their sizes affected how much they could carry before sinking.
In English this week we have been focusing on poetry. We have looked at the poem 'The School Kids Rap' by John Foster. We have looked at creating rhyming couplets, altering lines in the poem, writing our own poem and performing our own versions of 'The school Kids Rap' to the class.
This week in Maths we have been looking at angles and perimeter. We have looked at acute, obtuse, reflex and right angles and thought about recognising angles as turns. We have also looked at perimeter, understanding the term perimeter and finding the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes.
Robin Hood Day
Today we have had a blogging day all about Robin Hood with Tawny Owl Class. We made a Robin Hood hat or a flowery headband which we then wore for the rest of the day. Then we made a bow out of wood and string and some arrows out of paper straws, card and feathers. After that we created a dagger out of card, foil and string. After lunch we went outside for an archery competition which was a lot of fun. Our last activity was a bit of dancing which we copied from the Robin Hood film. We then blogged about our fun day! This week in Maths we have been looking at fractions. We have focused on learning which part of the fraction is the denominator and which part is the numerator, adding fractions and reducing fractions.
This week in English we have been looking at writing a newspaper article. We have watched the Video 'Stray' created by Maria Walczak. We have created a news paper report, a news paper heading and acted out a news report based on the story.
This week in Maths we have been looking at using partitioning to add two and three digit numbers.We have been dividing the number into hundreds, tens and ones and adding them together. We have used place value cards to help us paritition the numbers.
This term our topic is 'The Wonders of Worksop'. We are learning about Worksop and surrounding areas throughout different periods of time. We are looking at Welbeck, Clumber Park, Sherwood Pines and many more places.
English: In English, this term our focus text will be 'The Adventures of Despereaux' . We will be using this text to explore different writing techniques. We will be focusing on using paragraphs in our writing and focusing on our spellings. We will complete a spelling test once a week and we will practise SPaG techniques and spellings everyday.
Maths: In Maths, we will be looking at shape, place value, time, fractions and mental multiplication. We will be continuing with column addition and subtraction and beginning to look at leap frog method for subtraction.
History/Geography: We will be looking at the history of Worksop and surrounding areas. We will also be looking at map reading and the structure of forests in Clumber Park and Sherwood Pines.
Computing: We will be looking at developing our coding knowledge this term. We will be learning about algorithms, how to debug programmes, how to give directional code and how to use repeating blocks.
Science: In Science, we will be learning all about magnets and forces. We will be learning about gravity, push and pull forces and how magnets work.
Art:This term, we will be having graphic design lessons each week run by our new Art teacher Mr Slaney.
Music: We will be having ukulele lessons with Mr Oakton for the first half term and Djemebe lessons with Mr Bellingham.
French: We will be having weekly French sessions with Madame Walsh to continue to develop our skills in reading, writing and speaking French.
RE: This term, we will be learning about Buddhism until half term after which we will be learning about Easter.
Physical Education: This term, we will continue to have PE sessions each Thursday with Mr Scott. We will also have weekly Karate Sessions with Sensei Dave. We are also continuing with our swimming lessons until February half term.
Venture Experts: Children will continue to have their chosen venture experts sessions on Tuesday afternoons until the half term break. Children will then get to select a new Venture Experts activity to take part in.
Children attended a service at St Johns Church today to celebrate Christmas with a christingle service. Each child had the opportunity to make their own christingle and sing hymns.
Christmas Wreath Blogging
We have enjoyed a Christmas themed blogging event this term! We cut out around 100 felt circles and pinned them onto a polystyrene ring to create a beautiful wreath. Have a look at some of our creations and head over to our class blog to read all about it!
This week in Maths we have been working in pairs to think of different ways to answer test questions. We have worked really hard this term and some assessment questions can be tricky so we don't want them to trick us! We practised lots of questions and thought of the best and easiest way to answer and check each question.
This week in Maths we have been learning about place value. We have been placing numbers on a number line thinking about the value of each number. We have also been using the greater than and less than symbol to order numbers depending on value.
History and Geography
Today in History we have learnt about another Ancient Greek myth. We have learnt all about the story of Medusa and the Quest of Perseus. We retold the story first in a story circle and then we created freeze frames to act out the myth.
This week in our computing lesson we have been coding. We have used the coding game called Run Marco to learn about programming and computer codes. The children have to programme an explorers path through a number of different levels.
You can play Run Marco on an app on an iPad or online on a computer.
This week in English we have been writing a report. We have used bullet points, headings and sub-headings to create our reports. We have also tried being a news reporter, reporting on a dragon sighting in Worksop and Sheffield.
This week in Maths we have been learning how to tell the time. We have been looking at o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to times. We have also started to look at counting the minutes in fives and converting digital to analogue time. We have also started to use our class watches. This means that two children will be chosen to wear a watch for the day and will be asked the time at many points throughout the day to make sure we are also thinking about how to tell the time.
This week in English we have been looking at describing animals using a range of writing techniques. We have used adjectives, expanded noun phrases, similes and commas in a list to improve our writing. The children have been using their class book 'Where my Wellies Take Me' to see how these techniques can be used to create an interesting and detailed description. The children have also based their descriptions on some of the lovely illustrations from the book.

This week in English we have been looking at Greek myths, to follow up on our topic work of Ancient Greece. We have been writing out own openings for the story of Theseus and the Minotaur and also using drama to act out the story.
Art and DT
This week we have been designing an Ancient Greek Pot. We created a design on paper first and made sure our designs told a story, just like some of the Ancient Greek Pots would have done. Then we used clay and other tools to create our own pot. We used our hands to warm up the clay and then mould it into a rough pot shape. We then smoothed out any cracks using water and paintbrushes.
This week in English we have been planning and writing a story based in Pompeii. The children have created a story plan identifying paragraphs and story openings. The children have then started to create their stories focusing on writing in full sentences and using expanded noun phrases. They have written a character description and a setting description focusing on what life would have been like in Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius erupted.

This week in Maths we have looked at number bonds to ten, twenty and one hundred. We have also looked at near doubles and used all this knowledge to help us with addition and subtraction. Play this number bond game to help you with your knowledge on number bonds.
This week in English we have been reading the story 'Escape from Pompeii'. The children have read the story and then hot seated the charters. We have then written as if we were living in Pompeii using 1st person.
