Welcome to Swallow Class!

We are a group of 30 hardworking Year 5 children, who are enthusiastic towards our learning and are always trying our best in everything we do. Swallow Class are taught by Miss Smith and the TAs in the class are Mrs Prince and Mrs Williams.

P.E: Children will have a weekly P.E session with Mr Scott on a Thursday. Please ensure your child has a P.E kit in school.

 

Book Bags: Children will be provided with a reading diary and a library book. Please ensure your child brings their reading book and diary to school every day. Diaries will be signed each week and children will be given the chance to change their reading books weekly.

 

Water Bottles: Please bring fresh drinking water every day.

 

Homework: Homework will be sent home each week along with a list of spellings and children will be tested on these spellings the following week.

English

This week in English we have focused on poetry and looked at the poem ‘The Jabberwocky’ by Lewis Carroll. We looked at the nonsense vocabulary used and wrote our own versions and we also performed the poem in groups to the rest of the class. Maths

In maths this week we have been looking at using a written method to solve multiplications. Can you solve the following?

English

This week in English we have looked at the differences between a biography and an autobiography. We then had the chance to write our own autobiographies about ourselves and also through the eyes of Harry Potter.

Maths

This week in maths we have been solving word problems involving money. We looked at mental methods we can use to add amounts together and then we moved onto finding the change.

RE

This week in RE we looked at Pilgrimages. We then thought about our own special places and why they are special to us.

During the Summer Term our topic will be The Vikings. We will be taking part in a range of different activities based on the Vikings and their way of life. Take a look below to see what we will be learning about:

 

History: In History we will be looking at Viking life, famous Viking people and how Britain has been shaped by the Vikings.

 

Geography: During Geography sessions we will be looking at how to use an atlas and a compass to follow and give directions.

 

Science: In science we will be examining the effects of forces. Throughout the term, we will examine and investigate forces such gravity, friction, air resistance and water resistance. 

 

RE: In RE sessions, we will be examining the different pilgrimages that are taken by a range of different religions such as Christianity, Islamism, Judaism and Hinduism. 

 

Art and DT: In Art and DT we will be looking at recreating Viking artwork, whilst working with Mr Slaney.

 

Music: We are very excited to continue our band sessions in Year 5. In band sessions we will have the opportunity to develop our skills on different instruments.

 

PE: We will continue to have weekly PE sessions with Mr Scott, our school sports coach and we will also have weekly Karate sessions with Sensei Dave.

 

French: We will continue to develop our skills in French in our weekly lessons with Madame Walsh.

 

Computing: During computing sessions we will be working on creating our own websites. Throughout the term, we will examine how to create and edit our own websites on out class topic.

 

Venture Experts: We will continue with Venture Experts this term, reading for our showcase in Summer 2.

This week in maths we have been focusing on fractions. We are now able to confidently convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, multiply fractions by a whole number and also order fractions on a number line.

Reading Challenge!

Well done to all of the children who managed to read everyday last week and therefore received an envelope.  These children were very lucky, they won a golden ticket and received a book.

RE

This week in RE we learnt about mindfulness and creating inner peace. We completed a mindfulness activity whilst listening to relaxing music and then reflected on how this made us feel. We all really enjoyed this activity.

World Book Day!

English

This week in English we began looking at newspaper articles and the key features. We decided that a good newspaper article should include: headline, 5 Ws, rhetorical question, reported speech and be in chronological order.

Maths

During this week in maths we have completed maths assessments, the children have tried extremely hard and should be very proud of themselves.

E-Safety Day

This week we have focused on the importance of E-Safety and discussed many issues as a class. We designed posters with key rules to follow when using the internet.

During Science this week we have been carrying on with our topic of Space.  We looked at the different planets in our solar system and learnt some very interesting facts about them

Geography

This week in Geography we looked at Global Warming which links to our Spring topic of Back to the Future!  We looked at the causes and effects of global warming and what it could mean for us in the future.  We recorded our findings on a poster and presented them to the rest of the class.

Mayan Day!

On Wednesday we had a visit from Partake and took part in a Mayan day. English

During this week in English we have looked at narrative writing. We discussed including different features in our writing, including: expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, modal verbs, relative clauses, conjunctions and parenthesis.

RE

This week we started our new topic: Peace. We discussed what makes a peaceful environment in the class and made our own list of how to create a peaceful environment.

During the Spring Term our topic will be ‘Back to the Future’. We will be taking part in a range of different activities and looking at lots of different things from the past and in the future, ranging from space to natural disasters.

Science: Our Science topic for the first half term will be ‘Earth and Space’ where we will be looking at the different planets in our Solar System, explain how day and night occur and we will also be looking at the movement of the moon. Our second topic will be ‘Scientists and Inventors’ and we will looking at the work of: David Attenborough, Margaret Hamilton, Leonardo da Vinci and Eva Crane.

 

Geography: During Geography sessions we will be looking at climate change and global warming.  We will also be looking at ways it can be prevented and what we can do.

 

History: In History we will be looking how our local area of Worksop has changed over time and also predict how we think it might change in the future.

 

Art and DT: In DT we will have the change to design our own mode of transport.

 

Music: We are very excited to continue our band sessions in Year 5. In band sessions we will have the opportunity to develop our skills on different instruments.

 

PE: We will continue to have weekly PE sessions with Mr Scott, our schools sports coach, continue with our swimming lessons until February half term and we will also have weekly Karate sessions with Sensei Dave.

 

French: We will continue to develop our skills in French in our weekly lessons with Madame Walsh.

 

Computing: During computing sessions we will be working on Scratch learning how to program characters and how to create our own games.

 

Venture Experts: We will continue with Venture Experts this term, children will have the chance to choose a new activity after February half term.

During maths this weeks we have been looking at using a protractor to measure and draw angles. This is something we found quite tricky as a class but have shown excellent determination and persistence and are now more confident with this concept.

On Friday it was our Christmas Fayre. Swallow class spent some of the day decorating our classroom and making Christmas decorations to sell.

This week in English we have been looking at balanced arguments. We discussed what it means to write a balanced argument and discuss the features we should include in our writing, including:

This week in English we have continued to look at persuasive texts. We have looked at a balanced argument and the features that are included. We then wrote our own balanced arguments and even took part in a class debate about whether we think animals should be kept in captivity.

Maths

This week in maths we have looked at factors, prime number and square numbers. We are now able to confidently find the factors of any number and explain why it has a certain amount. We are also now able to identify both prime and square numbers and can prove and justify why they are these types of numbers.

On Wednesday Year 5 took part in a blogging afternoon and also had the chance to stay late after school. We took part in many fun activities including: designing our own Mayan masks, designing and making our own chocolate and making corn bread. This week in English we have continued to look at persuasive writing and have written a persuasive letter. We looked at the OREO method to structure our writing: Opinion, Reason, Explanation/Example and Opinion. We have also looked at including expanded noun phrases, relative clauses, modal verbs and parenthesis in our writing. Maths

In maths this week we have been look at written multiplication and division. We are now able to use the ladder method to complete multiplications and are confident with carrying. With division we have been practising the bus stop method and can now convert a remainder into a fraction. We will continue to work on both of these methods this year.

This week we have continued looking at our topic: The Mayans. We have looked at Mayan religious beliefs, including the creation story and the different Gods they worshiped. We then had the chance to design our own Mayan God.

We have spent the week looking at persuasive texts and firstly we identified the features of a persuasive text and then we wrote our own. This week in English we have written a diary entry through the eyes of the character Bertie from The Butterfly Lion. We based our diary entries on the first chapter when Bertie wants to leave boarding school. We looked at the features of a diary entry and tried to include them in our own writing.

This week in art we have completed artwork based on pieces of traditional Mayan paintings. We focused on the different colours, shapes and patterns.

This week in English we were introduced to our new class book: The Butterfly Lion. We examined the front cover and the blurb and made predictions about what we thought the book would be about. We then looked at the quote: ‘All my life I’ll think of you, I promise I will. I won’t ever forget you' from the book and we have written our own narratives based on it. This week in maths we have been focusing on subtractions, our main focus has been on using the column method and the children are able to successfully carry a ten or hundred when needed. We then looked at different methods we could use to complete subtractions.

This week in science we have researched facts about insets and amphibians. Then we looked at some of their lifecycles, including: frogs, butterflies and newts.

This week in English we have been using a video for a stimulus for our writing, we have used the video ‘The Lighthouse’ from the Literacy Shed. In maths this week we have been focusing on time. We have looked at how to read both 12 and 24-hour times and can convert between them.  We have also been calculating time intervals by using a number line.

School Councillors

This week the children who wanted to be a school councillor at Norbridge had the chance to present a speech to the rest of the class. We then had a class vote and our school councillors for Year 5 will be Maddison Clarke and Kian Eves.

Hathersage

Last week 24 children from Swallow Class visited Hathersage for a three night residential.  We had the chance to take part in a 8km walk to Stanage Edge, map reading during orienteering and crayfishing.  We really enjoyed our time in Hathersage and especially enjoyed our visit to Hathersage outdoor swimming pool.

Year 5

We have had a great first two days in year 5.  We have looked at some of the mathematical concepts we will be covering in year 2 including: written addition, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, ordering and comparing numbers and written multiplication and division.  We have also looked at how to write a setting description that draws the reader in.

Autumn 1

At the beginning of Year 5 Swallow class are extremely lucky and get the chance to go on a class residential to Hathersage.

During Year 5 our first topic will be ‘The Mayans’. We have lots of fun and exciting activities planned; take a look below to see what we will be learning about:

 

Science: Our Science topic for the first half term will be ‘Living things and their habitats’. We will be learning about parts of a flower, the ways plants can be pollinated, how to grow new plants other than from seed, the different types of mammals and the stages of the life cycles of mammals, birds, insects and amphibians.

 

Geography: We will be studying Mexico, learning about its food, culture and art and we will also be comparing the position of Mexico compared to the UK. During our Geography sessions we will also be learning about the physical and human geography of Mexico.

 

History: During our History sessions we will be learning about the Mayan Civilisation, religions and beliefs, daily life and social structure. We will also be learning all about chocolate and the importance it place in Mayan life.

 

Art and D&T: We will be creating pieces of art in the style of Mexican artists using a range of materials and experiment with different techniques and ideas. We will also have the chance to design Mexican Day of the Dead masks and make different traditional Mexican food.

 

Music: We are very excited to start continue our band session in Year 5. In band sessions we will have the opportunity to develop our skills on different instruments.

 

PE: We will continue to have weekly PE sessions with Mr Scott, our schools sports coach. In Year 5, we will also have swimming lessons for half the year. Letters will be sent out containing dates for these sessions. Children will also be able to choose to take part in Karate session throughout the year.

 

French: We will continue to develop our skills in French in our weekly lessons with Madame Walsh.

 

Computing: During computing sessions we will be learning how to move and edit blocks as part of an algorithm, program an algorithm as a sequence of game instructions with actions and consequences and add additional effects and features to enhance the appeal of a game.

 

Venture Experts: We are excited to reveal our new Venture Experts programme this year, where the children will have the opportunity to try new activities and develop skills in an area of their choice. We will be sharing more details very soon.
