Year 1 Sycamore Class
Welcome to Sycamore Class's Page
We are a Year 1 Class at Norbridge Academy in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
We are always busy learning new things and we are keen to share our achievements. On our class page we will share some of the exciting things that we get up to in class. We also have our own class blog that allows us to share some of wonderful writing with the world. Have a look:
We have made the most of the nice weather and done our Maths lesson outside today. We have been learning about doubling numbers, we used practical resources to double numbers and then recorded our Maths work using chalk on the playground.
Phonics Screening Test
This week we have done our Year 1 Phonics Screening Test. We have worked really hard in our phonics sessions, learning the different phonic sounds and blending the sounds together to read words. We did really well in the screening and as a reward we got an extra long, sunny playtime. We all had an ice cream and got to use the chalks to do some drawing on the playground.
Visit from the fire service
We have had a visit from the fire service this week. We did a range of activities looking at hazards in the home, good and bad fires, how to contact the fire service in an emergency and how to perform the stop, drop, roll procedure. We really enjoyed their visit and learnt lots about how to keep ourselves safe.
We have been learning about the World cup in Brazil. We have looked at the flags of some the different countries competing in the competition, we then chose a country and drew their flag. We designed our own football shirt for that country and then we designed our own football using the draw app on the ipads.
Seaside holidays in the past
In History we have been atSeaside holidays in the past. We looked at how they used to advertise Seaside trips using posters and discussed the features of them. We then created our own Seaside posters advertising Skegness. We thought carefully about how we could make our posters eye catching and make people want to visit Skegness. Have a look at some of our wonderful posters below. Do they make you want to visit the Seaside?
As a reward for working really hard in our phonics session, we got to go outside and use the large chalks to draw a seaside themed picture on the playground. We really enjoyed this activity and created some lovely artwork. Have a look at some of our work below:
Music: Using the Ipads
In Summer Term 1 we are going to be using simple apps on the Ipads to create music. To start the topic we looked at making sounds using different objects such as musical instruments, pots and sticks, classroom resources and the Ipads. We thought about the different sounds we can make using the different objects. We had 5 minutes on each table to explore the sounds we could make. Once we had explored the sounds, we hid the objects under a blanket and we played one and the other children had to guess what object was making the sound.
Class Trip to the Butterfly House
We have been on a class trip to The Butterfly House in North Anston. It was a very exciting day, we travelled on a double decker coach. When we arrived we had a play on the park, we looked round all the different animals and had talks by experts from the Butterfly House. We even got to hold some of the animals, such as snakes, millipedes and cockroaches. We had a fantastic day, have a look at some of the photos below:
Spring Term Homework
In Spring Term we got our new homework books based on our Deadly 60 Topic. Each week we get to choose one of the homework activities to complete. We collect different amounts of points depending on the homework we choose. There are prizes given out at the end of each term for the children with the most points. The children in Sycamore Class have produced some fantastic homework pieces! Have a look at some of our homework below:
As part of our Deadly 60 topic, we have looked at the Arctic climate and the animals that live there. In Science we have conducted a range of simple investigations related to ice. We have held ice cubes and described what they felt like and played a game of musical ice caps thinking about how the animals will survive as the ice caps melt. We have also tested a range of materials to see which would keep the Animals the warmest in the Arctic.
We have been helping Mrs Cauldwell with the school garden. We work in groups to help harvest the fruit and vegetables and plant new seeds. We even get to taste the produce!
This year we have started learning Karate. We all have our own Karate kits and belts and we work hard to earn tags so that we can get a new colour belt. Have a look at the photos of us in our Karate kits below:
