Autumn 2 Week 6

 

English

This week we examined a new class book 'Christmas at the Toy Museum' by David Lucas. In our lessons this week, we predicted what would happen in the story, thought of and described what Christmas presents we would give to Bunting and then planned and took part in a debate with Peacock Class by debating the question 'Should we have Christmas Day every day?

 

Maths

In maths this week we started a new topic of 'Multiplication and Division'. To start our topic, we first examined how to find and make equal groups.

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. This week we found out all about the life of John McAdam, an inventor who is famous for inventing a new method of building roads. After we had found out about the famous inventor, we then created a factfile on the life of John McAdam.

 

 

History

This week we examined how toys have changed over time. To do this we considered the different ways that toys have changed such as what materials they have been made from, whether they are safer today or in the past, and who can play with them.

 

Art

In art this week we completed our balloon dog pictures that we started in the previous week's art lesson. To finish our pictures, we used different coloured card and paint to first create a hedge and then a balloon dog by drawing around an oval stencil before cutting and painting each section of our balloon dog. We then stuch these together to create a picture based on the work of Jeff Koons.

Autumn 2 Week 5

 

English

This week in English, we continued to work on our new class book 'Traction Man is Here' by Mini Grey. Throughout the week, we examined the features of instruction texts such as headings, subheadings and imperative verbs. After this, we planned and wrote an instruction text based on Traction Man about how to take care of a pet scrubbing brush.  

 

Maths

In maths this week we continued our topic of Money. This week we compared amounts of money, found totals, found the difference in two amounts and began to examine how to find change. 

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. In this week's lesson, we examined the process of recycling. Throughout the lesson we examined what happens when our recycling is sent to a recycling plant and how it is recycled to make new objects. 

 

RE

In RE, we continued our topic of 'Ceremonies'. In our lesson this week, we examined Hindu weddings. We first discussed what we already knew about weddings. After this we examined what takes place at a Hindu wedding then we used our senses to describe what we would be able to see, hear, taste and smell if we were at a Hindu wedding. 

 

History

This week we examined some of the toys that Victorian children would have played with in the Victorian era. To do this, we first looked at images of Victorian toys and discussed what they were made from and how children would have played with them. We then compared the Victorian toys to our modern day toys. 

 

Art

This week we began to create a layered picture of a balloon dog based on the work of the famous artist Jeff Koons. To do this we first created a city skyline using yellow card and whiteboar pens. 

Autumn 2 Week 4

 

English

This week in English, we began work on our new class book 'Traction Man is Here' by Mini Grey. Throughout the week, we took part in a range of activities to learn the story of Traction Man such as completing a text map, a 'tell me square' and then created our own comic strips. 

 

Maths

In maths this week we began to work on our new unit of work, money. Across the week we worked hard to recognise different coins and notes. We then began to add coins and notes together. 

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. In this week's lesson, we examined the properties of materials by discussing whether we can twist, pull, squash, stretch or bend a range of everyday materials such as a can or a sock. 

 

RE

This week we continued our topic of 'Ceremonies'. This week, we explored what happens in the Sikh celebration of Dasta Bandi. We also examined some of the key aspects of sikhism.  

 

Computing

This week in computing we continued our topic of 'Using the Internet'. This week we examined how to complete one word searches by using a search engine. To do this we discussed what a browser is and how to recognise these and a range of search engines. 

Autumn 2 Week 3

 

English

This week in English, we continued to work on our new class book 'Lost in the Toy Museum: An Adventure' by David Lucas. This week, we worked hard to create a new version of the story by changing some of the settings that the main character 'Bunting' visits on his adventure around the toy museum. 

 

Maths

In maths this week we finished our work on addition and subtraction. This week we continued to work hard to develop are knowledge in adding 2-digit and 1-digit numbers using both mental and written methods. Specifically, we began to use column addition and subtraction to help us add and subtract two 2-digit numbers. 

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. In this week's lesson, we compared the suitability of materials by examining the properties of materials and why they are suitable to use in everyday objects. 

 

RE

This week we continued our topic of 'Ceremonies'. This week, we examined what happens at a Jewish Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies. To do this we first discussed what happens in these ceremonies before playing a boardgame where children had to answer a range of questions that they had learned about the ceremonies. 

 

History

This week in history, we continued to work on our topic of 'Toys'. In this lesson, we compared how toys have changed over time by examining how some toys such as 'Meccano' where originally designed for a certain user but now is used as a contruction toy that everyone can use. We also compared the designs of packaging by discussing how these have changed over time. 

Autumn 2 Week 2

 

English

This week in English, we continued to work on our new class book 'Lost in the Toy Museum: An Adventure' by David Lucas. This week we focused on learning the story of Lost in the Toy Museum. To do this we completed a range of activities such as creating a story map and boxing up the story. We also wrote questions that we would like to ask the main character of the story. 

 

Maths

In maths this week we continued with our work on addition and subtraction. This week we continued to work hard to develop are knowledge in adding 2-digit and 1-digit numbers using both mental and written methods. We also examined how to use number bonds to 10 to help us learn our number bonds to 100.

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. In this week's lesson, we went over the different everyday materials that we discussed in our previous lesson. We then went outside and investigated which materials we could find that had been used to make different objects around the school playground and field. 

 

RE

This week we conitnued our new topic of 'Ceremonies'. In this lesson, we learned all about Aqiqah ceremonies that are performed as part of the religion of Islam. To do this we examined what happens in an Aqiqah ceremony.

 

Art

In art this week, we continued our work based on the artist Jeff Koons. In this lesson, we used clay to sculpt our own animal models based on the models made by Jeff Koons. 

 

Partake Theatre Company Visit

On Monday, we were lucky enough to be visited by Partake Theatre Company who showed us how toys have changed over time. Throughout the morning, we examined some of the earliest toys and the materials that they had been made out of. We then examined toys that we have today and discussed the differences and similarities of these more modern toys. Finally, we were given the opporunity to play with a range of toys that are powered by different methods for example by pulling it along or by using your imagination. 

Autumn 2 Week 1

 

English

This week in English, we started to work on our new class book 'Lost in the Toy Museum: An Adventure' by David Lucas. Across the week, we read through the story and examined some of the characters. We then used this to create our own character descriptions by describing what a character looks like, what they wear and their personality. 

 

Maths

In maths this week we continued with our work on addition and subtraction. This week we worked hard to develop are knowledge in adding 2-digit and 1-digit numbers using both mental and written methods. 

 

Science

This week in science we started our new topic of 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. To start our new topic, we began to describe a range of everyday materials such as wood, glass and plastic. We then considered where we might find these materials and what they have been used to make in our everyday lives. 

 

Art

This week in art and design we began to work on our new area of study by examining the work of the artist Jeff Koons. As Jeff Koons is famous for creating sculptures of balloon dogs, we started our new topic by learning how to draw a 3D balloon dog based on the sculpture 'Balloon Dog Orange'.  

 

RE

This week we started our new topic of 'Ceremonies'. For our first lesson, we discussed what ceremonies are and whether or not we have taken part in any ceremonies before. We then described the ceremonies that we had taken part in and compared these to the experiences of others. 

 

History

This week we started our new topic of 'Toys'. In our first lesson, we discussed what our favourite toys are and why we like them so much. We then thought about what the toys are made out of and what we use to power them for example by using electricity or our imaginations.

Autumn 1 Week 5

 

English

This week in English, we began to work on our new class text 'The Hodgeheg' by Dick King Smith. Throughout the week, we read through the story and used this to help us research facts about hedgehogs. We then examined and began to plan a non-chronological report all about hedgehogs.

 

Maths

In maths this week we began to work on our new topic of 'Addition and Subtraction'. To start this topic revised our number bonds to ten, learnt how to check calculations and compared a range of number sentences. 

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. For our learning this week, we examined how different plants and animals depend on each other to survive. We then used this to examine dependency in the world habitats that we learned about in the previous week.

 

 

Art

This week in art and design we continued our work on 'Pop Art'. This week, we began to create a layered painting by painting the individual parts of our picture. We will then finish and put all of our pieces together next session to make our final piece. 

 

Geography

This week we continued our Geography topic of 'Jungles' by examining the cloud forest in Monteverde in Costa Rica. Throughout the lesson, we discussed what we could see in the cloud forest, what animals might live there and what we would do if we were in the cloud forest. 

 

Computing

In computing this week, we discussed how to recognise if a website is appropriate or not. To do this we used example websites and discussed whether we thought that a website was safe, whether we should use the website with an adult or whether a website was not safe for us to use. 

 

Design and Technology

This weekin Design and Technology, we researched existing styles of hedgehog houses. We then used these existing designs to create a design brief for our own hedgehog houses. Finally, we designed our own hedgehog houses and labelled the different features and materials of our designs. 

Autumn 1 Week 4

 

English

This week in English, we continued working on our class book 'Little Red' by Bethan Woollvin. This week, we examined how to write letters. To do this we first examined the structure of a letter and, as the week went on, we gradually built up our own letter by imagining that we were the Big Bad Wolf asking Little Red if she will forgive him. We then completed an independent write of our letters.

 

Maths

In maths this week we finished our first topic of Place Value. Throughout the week we examined how to learned how to count in 2's, 5's 10's and 3's from a given number. 

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. For our learning this week, we examined different world habitats such as oceans, jungles, deserts and the arctic. We then discussed the types of animals that live there and thought about why these animals are able to survive in these habitats. 

 

 

Art

This week in art and design we continued our work on 'Pop Art'. This week, we examined onomatopoeias and their use in Lichtenstein's art work. We then practised writing in block capitals in the style of Lichtenstein.

 

 

Geography

This week we continued our Geography topic of 'Jungles' by examining mangroves. Throughout the lesson we learned about how mangroves provide different habitats for animals such as monkeys, snakes and different species of fish. We then discussed how mangroves change as the tide goes in and out. 

 

RE

In RE this week we examined why Sukkot is important to Jewish people. Throughout the lesson we discuss what Sukkot is and why it is celebrated by Jewish people. 

Autumn 1 Week 3

 

English

This week in English, we continued working on our class book 'Little Red' by Bethan Woollvin. For our learning this week, we planned and created a new version of 'Little Red' but changed the hero, villain and the setting of the original story. 

 

Maths

In maths this week we began our new topic of Place Value. This week we examined how to compare a range of objects and numbers. We then revised counting in 2's from our learning in Year 1.

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. This week we examined microhabitats and what minibeasts might live there. Once we had discussed microhabitats, we then went onto the school playground and field to try and find any microhabitats and minibeasts. 

 

 

Art

This week in art and design we continued our work on 'Pop Art'. This week, we examined a picture of a sunrise by Lichtenstein by discussing the colours and techniques used in the painting. We then attempted to replicate these features by finishing our own sunrise picture. 

 

Geography

This week we began our Geography topic of 'Jungles'. In geography this week we examined the differences between Indian jungles in both the wet and dry seasons and how these impact the plants and animals that grow and live there.

 

Computing

In computing this week we examined how to search for a given subject online. To do this we were given a task of finding out information on a given country. We then discussed how to use a search engine to safely search the internet for appropriate results. We also examined how keywords can help us to find webpages that will contain the information that we need.

Autumn 1 Week 2

 

English

This week in English, we continued working on our class book 'Little Red' by Bethan Woollvin. Throughout the week we retold the story of Little Red but then we each changed how the story ended to create a new story.

 

Maths

In maths this week we began our new topic of Place Value. This week we examined how to compare and order numbers between 0 - 100 by stating which numbers were bigger or smaller. We also began to use part whole models to partition numbers into tens and ones. 

 

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. This week we examined the different types of habitats before discussing what animals might life in each habitat and how they stay safe.

 

RE
In RE this week we examined the Christian Creation Story. This week we discussed what Christians might do on Sunday and linked this to the Christian Creation Story as this tells us that God rested on the seventh day.

 

Art

This week in art and design we continued our work on 'Pop Art'. In this lesson, we learnt how to create a range of marks on our page using our pencil. To do this we examined how to correctly hold a pencil and how we can use our wrist to help us create lines and circles. We also looked at how we can change the way we hold our pencils to create shading.  

 

Geography

This week we began our Geography topic of 'Jungles'. In our first geography lesson, we examined why some countries have jungles and others don't as well as finding jungles on a map of the world to see how close they are to the equator.

Autumn 1 Week 1

 

English

This week in English, we started work on our first class book 'Little Red' by Beth Woolfin. Throughout the week, we read through the book and compared this to the traditional story of Little Red Riding Hood. We also made predictions about what we thought would happen and sequenced the events in the story.

 

Maths

In maths this week we worked hard to revise the place value that we learned whilst in Year 1. To do this, we examined how many tens and ones 2-digit numbers have and revised our numbers from 1-20.

 

Science

This week in science we started our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. For our first lesson, we examined how we know if things are living, dead or have never been alive. We also examined what living things need to do to be alive.

 

RE
In RE this week we examined the Christian Creation Story. To do this we discussed how Christians believe that that God created the world in seven days and what we did on each of these days.

 

Art

This week in art and design we began our work on 'Pop Art'. To start this topic, we examined what Pop Art is and then researched the famous pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.
