Autumn Term

Autumn 1 Week 5

English

This week in English, we began to work on our new class text 'The Hodgeheg' by Dick King Smith. Throughout the week, we read through the story and used this to help us research facts about hedgehogs. We then examined and began to plan a non-chronological report all about hedgehogs.

Maths

In maths this week we began to work on our new topic of 'Addition and Subtraction'. To start this topic revised our number bonds to ten, learnt how to check calculations and compared a range of number sentences.

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. For our learning this week, we examined how different plants and animals depend on each other to survive. We then used this to examine dependency in the world habitats that we learned about in the previous week.

Art

This week in art and design we continued our work on 'Pop Art'. This week, we began to create a layered painting by painting the individual parts of our picture. We will then finish and put all of our pieces together next session to make our final piece.

Geography

This week we continued our Geography topic of 'Jungles' by examining the cloud forest in Monteverde in Costa Rica. Throughout the lesson, we discussed what we could see in the cloud forest, what animals might live there and what we would do if we were in the cloud forest.

Computing

In computing this week, we discussed how to recognise if a website is appropriate or not. To do this we used example websites and discussed whether we thought that a website was safe, whether we should use the website with an adult or whether a website was not safe for us to use.

Design and Technology

This weekin Design and Technology, we researched existing styles of hedgehog houses. We then used these existing designs to create a design brief for our own hedgehog houses. Finally, we designed our own hedgehog houses and labelled the different features and materials of our designs.

Autumn 1 Week 4

English

This week in English, we continued working on our class book 'Little Red' by Bethan Woollvin. This week, we examined how to write letters. To do this we first examined the structure of a letter and, as the week went on, we gradually built up our own letter by imagining that we were the Big Bad Wolf asking Little Red if she will forgive him. We then completed an independent write of our letters.

Maths

In maths this week we finished our first topic of Place Value. Throughout the week we examined how to learned how to count in 2's, 5's 10's and 3's from a given number.

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. For our learning this week, we examined different world habitats such as oceans, jungles, deserts and the arctic. We then discussed the types of animals that live there and thought about why these animals are able to survive in these habitats.

Art

This week in art and design we continued our work on 'Pop Art'. This week, we examined onomatopoeias and their use in Lichtenstein's art work. We then practised writing in block capitals in the style of Lichtenstein.

Geography

This week we continued our Geography topic of 'Jungles' by examining mangroves. Throughout the lesson we learned about how mangroves provide different habitats for animals such as monkeys, snakes and different species of fish. We then discussed how mangroves change as the tide goes in and out.

RE

In RE this week we examined why Sukkot is important to Jewish people. Throughout the lesson we discuss what Sukkot is and why it is celebrated by Jewish people.

Autumn 1 Week 3

English

This week in English, we continued working on our class book 'Little Red' by Bethan Woollvin. For our learning this week, we planned and created a new version of 'Little Red' but changed the hero, villain and the setting of the original story.

Maths

In maths this week we began our new topic of Place Value. This week we examined how to compare a range of objects and numbers. We then revised counting in 2's from our learning in Year 1.

Science

This week in science we continued our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. This week we examined microhabitats and what minibeasts might live there. Once we had discussed microhabitats, we then went onto the school playground and field to try and find any microhabitats and minibeasts.

Art

This week in art and design we continued our work on 'Pop Art'. This week, we examined a picture of a sunrise by Lichtenstein by discussing the colours and techniques used in the painting. We then attempted to replicate these features by finishing our own sunrise picture.

Geography

This week we began our Geography topic of 'Jungles'. In geography this week we examined the differences between Indian jungles in both the wet and dry seasons and how these impact the plants and animals that grow and live there.

Computing

In computing this week we examined how to search for a given subject online. To do this we were given a task of finding out information on a given country. We then discussed how to use a search engine to safely search the internet for appropriate results. We also examined how keywords can help us to find webpages that will contain the information that we need.

We also looked at how we can change the way we hold our pencils to create shading.

We also made predictions about what we thought would happen and sequenced the events in the story.

Maths

In maths this week we worked hard to revise the place value that we learned whilst in Year 1. To do this, we examined how many tens and ones 2-digit numbers have and revised our numbers from 1-20.

Science

This week in science we started our topic of 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. For our first lesson, we examined how we know if things are living, dead or have never been alive. We also examined what living things need to do to be alive.
