Autumn Term

Autumn Term 1

Autumn 1 Week 5

English

This week in English, we continued to work on our focus text, 'The Hodgeheg' by Dick King Smith. This week, we began to work on non-chronological reports about hedgehogs. We first examined the features of a non-chronological report before researching our own facts about hedgehogs. We then created a text map of a non-chronological reports along with actions so that we could remember the features that we used.

Maths

This week in maths, we began a new unit of work on adding and subtracting. This week we examined number bonds to 10 and 20. We then examined the different fact families that we can write from three numbers.

Science

In science this week, we continued our unit of work on 'living things and their habitats'. This week we found out that microhabitats are small habitats where minibeasts (insects) live. We then completed a survey to investigate which minibeasts live around our school playground.

Geography

This week in geography, we continued our topic of 'forests vs deserts'. This week, we examined the different animals and plants that live in Sherwood Forest and compared these to the animals and plants that live and grow in the Arabian Desert.

RE

This week, we considered whether Moses was a good leader. We learned all about the life of Moses and how he saved the Israelites from the Egyptians. We also discussed how God helped to part the Red Sea and gave Moses the ten commandments. Finally, we created a storyboard to show the events of Moses' life before discussing whether we believed the Moses was a good leader.

Art

This week, we continued our work on animal art. For our art this week, we examined the different patterns that can be found on African animals. We then used paint to replicate the pattern of a Zebra.

Autumn 1 Week 4

English

This week in English, we continued to work on our focus text, 'The Hodgeheg' by Dick King Smith. This week, we planned our own diary entry from the point of view of Max the hedgehog. We then created our own diary entries by using past tense, first person and time order.

Maths

This week in maths, we continued to focus on place value. This week, we examined how to read numbers on a number line and estimate where numbers would go on number lines. We also learned about counting in 2's, 5's and 10s.

Science

In science this week, we continued our unit of work on 'living things and their habitats'. This week we examined how to tell if something is living, dead or was never alive. We discussed the 7 life processes that all living things do e.g. breath, reproduce, move, sense and others. We then investigated what we could find around our school that is living, dead or that has never been alive.

Geography

This week in geography, we continued our topic of 'forests vs deserts'. This week, we considered why the weather is warmer in the Arabian Desert compared to Sherwood Forest. We then examined the globe and discussed how the Earth is warmer nearer the equator and in the tropics. We then created our own diagrams to show where the equator is and the tropic of Cancer and Capricorn.

Computing

In computing this week, we continued our unit of work, 'IT around us'. This week, we considered what IT we have around the school and its purpose.

RE

This week, we considered whether Jesus was a good leader. We learned all about the life of Jesus and then discussed whether he was a good leader from what we learned. We then created our own freeze frames to show each part of the story.

Autumn 1 Week 3

English

This week in English, we continued to work on our focus text, 'The Hodgeheg' by Dick King Smith. This week, we examined the features of a diary entry. We then worked hard to create our own diary entries based in Max's first journey on trying to find out how to safely cross the road.

Maths

This week in maths, we continued our work on, place value. This week we examined how to partition 2-digit numbers into a range of tens and ones.

Science

In science this week, we began our unit of work on 'living things and their habitats'. This week we learned that a habitat is a palce where an animal chooses to live. We then considered why different animals might choose different habitats. Finally, we examined whether there were any animal habitats around our school playground and field before considering which animals might live in them and why.

Geography

This week in geography, we continued our topic of 'forests vs deserts'. This week, we considered the different types of weather that we might find in Sherwood Forest and then compared this with the weather in the Arabian Desert.

Computing

In computing this week, we began our unit of work, 'IT around us'. This week, we began by considering what IT (Information Technology) is - a computer or anything that works with a computer. We then used different examples of IT and other objects to determine what was IT and was not.

Harvest Festival

This week, we took part in the Year 1 and 2 Harvest Festival. We considered why we have a harvest festival before learning our own harvest song to perform to our adults as part of our harvest festival celebration.

Autumn 1 Week 2

English

This week in English, we began work on our new focus text, 'The Hodgeheg' by Dick King Smith. To start our learning, we read through the first three chapters of the Hodgeheg, considered what he liked and disliked about the text and created our own text map for the opening of the story.

Maths

This week in maths, we began our first maths unit of Year 2, place value. This week we examined how we to recognise tens and ones in 2-digit numbers, how to represent 2-digit numbers using a range of physical resources and how we can partition numbers using part whole models.

SMSC

In SMSC this week, we considered what it means to worry. We discussed how we feel when we feel worried and what we can do to make us feel better if we are worried about anything.

Geography

This week in geography, we began our new unit on deserts and forests. This week, we examined the location of Sherwood forest and the Arabian Desert.

Autumn 1 Week 1

English

We were very excited to start out English work in Year 2 this week! For our English lessons, we read two books by Sophy Henn, 'Almost Anything' and 'Pass it on'. We thought carefully about how these books made us feel and what the stories taught us, that we could do almost anything and that it is good to pass on positive thoughts and experiences.

Maths

In maths this week, we revisited some of the work that we completed throughout Year 1. We examined adding and subtracting 1-digit numbers and place value.

RE

In RE this week, we started our topic of 'What makes a good leader?' This week, we considered what a good leader needs to be, trustworthy, brave, kind and inspiring. We then thought about the people who inspire us and why they inspire us.

Music

This week in music, we had our very first lesson with Mr Bellingham where we began to learn how to play the djembes. We worked hard to copy a rhythm that was played to us.
