Maths
At Norbridge Academy, we recognise that maths is essential in daily life, equipping children with the vital skills and attitudes they need to succeed in the world. We want our pupils to recognise the significance of this subject and we aim to create resilient mathematicians who become independent and reflective thinkers.
At Norbridge Academy, we see mathematical reasoning as the bridge between fluency and problem solving, this is why we are working closely with the Maths Hub to implement the Mastery Approach for teaching maths - focusing on breadth and depth within each year group’s objectives. We believe that all children should have the same opportunities to learn, so are helped to fully grasp concepts through carefully scaffolded support, use of manipulatives and same-day intervention. We encourage a positive, ‘can-do’ attitude and create opportunities for pupils to build skills and strategies that can be applied across different subjects. When pupils have demonstrated a secure understanding of concepts within their year group, they are encouraged to show they understand more, know more and remember more, rather than being moved onto new content, thus deepening their understanding.
At Norbridge Academy, we follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Work, which is an ambitious, connected curriculum. White Rose Maths supports us to ensure our pupils:
Build a deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths
Make connections between different representations
Use mathematical talk and explain their reasoning
Enjoy learning more about mathematics

We begin our maths journey in Foundation Stage 1. In Foundation Stage 1 and 2, you will see that:
Teaching is embedded within a language-rich environment
Children have access to opportunities to experience number in everyday life
Children have the opportunity to explore maths resources that they will use in KS1
Children are introduced to appropriate maths vocabulary
As children moved into Foundation Stage 2, there are more opportunities for pupils to work in adult-led groups, ensuring they are ‘Year 1 Ready’. This is supported through the Mastering Number programme.
