Physical Activity

Developing our physical skills is a key aspect of our learning in Foundation Stage. We spend lots of time in the outdoors developing our gross motor skills and we also work hard to develop our fine motor skills in the classroom. Developing our abilities in gross motor and fine motor skills is a crucial foundation for our future learning. Look at the different ways you could support your child's gross motor and fine motor skills at home below. Select one of these to complete each day in your physical activity time on the timetable:

  • Practise balancing on one foot. How long can you balance on one foot? Can you balance on the other foot? How steady can you hold your balance?
  • Practise moving in different ways. Can you hop across the room? Can you run to the end of your garden? Can you try carefully walking backwards?
  • Practise throwing and catching a ball. How many times can you catch it without dropping it? How high can you throw it and still catch it?
  • Take part in a Joe Wicks PE session using one of his YouTube videos.
  • Try a cosmic yoga activity using one of the videos on YouTube.
  • Try a timed challenge e.g. How many times can you hop in one minute? Try the challenge again and see if you can increase your score.
  • Try threading beads onto a piece of string.
  • Practise doing buttons or zips up on your coats, cardigans or jackets.
  • Try a dough disco using the videos on YouTube.
  • Use small bricks or blocks to make a tower.
  • Make a concertina caterpillar using paper.
  • Practise drawing different 2D shapes and cut them out carefully using scissors.
  • Practise writing your name using different materials e.g. in shaving foam, with paint, in sand etc.
  • Practise using pegs to hang up items or pick up small items with them.
  • Practise being able to tie your shoe laces.
