Spring Term

Spring Term

Enquiry Questions:

Is it right to kill an animal for a human?

How has leisure and entertainment from previous decades influenced society?

Focus Texts:

English:

In Spring Term 1, we will be using the focus text, 'Pig Heart Boy' and we will be publishing our own newspaper reports and writing diary entries. In Spring Term 2, we will be writing a set of instructions and producing a fact file about hamsters.

Maths:

This term, we will be securing our understanding of number by focusing on: decimals, percentages, algebra and ratio. In addition to this, we will be converting units of measure and calculating the perimeter, area and volume of shapes.

Science - Animals including Humans and Living Things and their Habitats:

In Spring Term 1, we will be identifying and naming the main parts of the human circulatory system and we will even be dissecting a heart! In Spring Term 2, we will be classifying living things into groups according to their characteristics.

History - Leisure and Entertainment:

During the Spring Term, we will be taking a step back in time and exploring each decade as we think about key questions such as: 'How did music influence fashion?' and 'What is the effect of technology on leisure?'

Geography - British Holidays:

This term, we will begin to understand why Holiday Camps became popular in Britain and why the British holiday industry boomed from the 1930s onwards. As well as this, we will be identifying the similarities and differences between a holiday destination in the UK and a destination in Europe.

SMSC:

'Social Development' and 'Cultural Development' are our two themes for the Spring Term. In Spring Term 1, we will begin to understand the impact of our actions. In Spring Term 2, we will be thinking about what we can learn from others.

RE:

In Spring Term 1, we will continue our learning about Christianity and think about after-life, wisdom and authority. In Spring Term 2, we will start to think about secular beliefs.

PSHE:

'Relationships' is the theme for our learning this term. We will begin to identify different types of relationships and recognise when a relationship is unhealthy.

Art and Design:

In Spring Term 1, we will link our artwork to our science learning and create a surrealist sketch of an eye. In Spring Term 2, we will link our artwork to our geography learning and weave plastic to make a group image that tells a story.

Design Technology:

This term, we will be making a cap to protect British holidaymakers from the sun.

Music:

Linked to our history learning, we will discuss the dance crazes that influenced the 1960s and improvise our own variations of 'The Twist'. In our music lessons, we will learn how to use Garageband to create a film soundtrack.

Computing:

The focus for our learning this is Computer Science and we will be developing our skills on 'Scratch'.

French:

In our weekly lessons with Madame Walsh, we will be learning new vocabulary linked to hobbies and pastimes.

PE:

In Spring Term 1, Mr Scott will teach us how to play pop lacrosse. In Spring Term 2, we will be learning how to play tennis.
