English

This half term in English, we will be focusing our work on the great fire of London. To do this, we will use our new class focus text, 'Vlad and the Great Fire of London' by Kate Cunningham. Throughout the term, we will be using this text to create diary entries, acrostic poems and recount texts.

Maths

In maths over the next few weeks we will be completing two units of work. We will start off the half term by learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. After this we will examine a length and height.

Science

This term in science, our topic will continue to be based on 'the uses of everyday materials'. Our focus will be based around the great fire of London. To do this we will answer enquiry questions such as who invented the smoke detector? Who invented fire extinguishers and what makes materials fire resistant.

History

In history this term, we will attempt to answer our enquiry question 'what caused the fire of London and why did it spread?' Throughout the half term, we will examine a range of historical sources to determine when, where and how the fire started and what the impact of the fire was on the city of London.

Computing

In computing this term we will be learning all about computer art. Throughout the half term, we will be using computers to replicate a range of well known art forms such as pointillism and cubism.

Art and Design

This term in art, our focus will be 'sparks and flames'. Over the course of the term, we will examine a range of artforms which replicate the effects of fire.

RE

This term in RE we will be examining what Muslims believe about Allah, creation, prophets and divine decree. To do this we will be comapring the Muslim creation story with the two other creation stories that we have already examined this year. We will also examine Muslims' beliefs about Adam, Ibraham and Allah.

PSHE

This half term in PSHE, we will be learning about keeping safe and staying healthy. In our lessons, we will be learning about understanding how to make choices that can keep us safe and to recognise a range of potential dangers.

Spring 2 Week 5

English

This week in English, we began to examine how to write diary entries. This week we examined what happened to Samuel Pepys during the Great Fire of London. We then put the events of what happened to him in chronological order and used this to plan and start a diary entry from the point of view from Samuel Pepys.

Maths

This week we continued our work on fractions. This week we examined how to find quarters and thirds of given numbers. We also worked hard to recognise unit and non unit fractions.

Science

This week in science, we continued our unit of 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. This week we considered which materials would be best to build houses out of. To do this, we conducted an experiment to determine whether materials were flammable and which were fire resistant. We then used our results to suggest the best materials to use for building a house.

History

In history this week, we attempted to answer the question 'What happened after the fire?'. This lesson, we worked hard to describe a range of different artefacts from the Great Fire. We then considered why these were significant and what they tell us about what happened in and after the fire.

RE

This week in RE, we continued to learn about Islam. In this week's lesson, we learned all about the Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessing sbe upon him). We learned all about his life and who the significant people were who helped to raise him.

Art

This week in art, we began to create our own 3D pictures. In this lesson, we used sponges to paint a background of fire. We will then add to this in our next week's lesson to create a 3D image.

Spring 2 Week 3

English

This week in English, we continued to work on our new class focus text ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’ by Katie and Sam Cunningham. This week, we wrote our own recount texts based on what happened in the Great Fire of London from the point of view of Vlad the flea.

Maths

This week we continued our unit of work based on shapes. This week we learned how to recognise and count vertices, edges and faces on 3D shapes.

Science

This week in science, we continued our unit of 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. This week we went examined the work of John McAdam and learned about how he changed the way that roads are built.

History

In history this week, we attempted to answer the question 'What did people do in the height of the fire?'. To do this, we unpicked a painting of the Great Fire by examining what people were doing in the picture and how they might feel. We then used speech bubbles to write about what we thought each person in the picture would be saying at the time the picture was painted. Finally, we considered whether paintings were reliable sources or not.

RE

This week in RE, we continued to learn about Islam. Specifically, we examined what Muslims believe about creation. To do this, we examined the creation story of Islam and then recounted this story by creating our own story boards.

Art

This week in art, we examined how we can use tissue paper to create flames. To make our flames, we either ripped tissue paper and stuck in in a flame shape or we twisted the paper and then used this to create a flame shape. We then added this to a silhouette to create an effective flame picture.

History

In history this week, we attempted to answer the question 'Who was to blame for the spread of the fire?'. Throughout the lesson, we heard recounts of what happened at the start of the fire by some of the key people who were there such as Thomas Farrinor, Sir Thomas Bludworth, King Charles II and Samuel Pepys. We then used what we had learned to determine who we thought was the most to blame for the fire spreading. To find out who we though was most to blame, visit our class blog!
