Computing Day

Today we coded using Scratch JR. Our first task was to create a spooky forest. We had to create a background and add three characters. The second step was to add a title and change the colour. We then had to add the coding steps by following instructions. Next we had two challenges to complete: make the bat spin all the way around in a circle and add our own characters to make a spooky scene. We then moved on to our next challenge. The first step was to choose a background and add a basketball as the character. We then had to move the characters by dragging them to the centre of the screen. We again had to follow instructions to add the coding to the bottom. Our challenges on this task were to make the cat shoot the ball in the basket and try and make the characters move at the same time. After completing both tasks we had a chance to edit our Scratch projects with our own ideas.

Creswell Crags- Stone Age School

Today we visited Creswell Crags, a place that is riddled with naturally formed caves that were once home to Ice Age animals, Neanderthals and humans. The site includes thousands of artefacts and fossilized bones and the only Ice Age rock art in Britain. Every object tells a tale of deep history and illustrates the fascinating story of how we lived in what was once the extreme northern frontier of the known world.

When we arrived we were split into three tribes: Reindeer Tribe, Grey Wolf Tribe and Cave Hyena Tribe. We all got the chance to take part in two workshops and a cave tour.

The first workshop was Survival Skills. We found out how we could find food out in the wilds, create a campsite and start a fire. We then got to have a go at making our own campsite and shelter using animal skin, rope and sticks.

The second workshop was all about rocks. We had a go at identifying a range of rocks through observations. We found out how to classify the rocks into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

We had a cave tour in the Robin Hood Cave which is the largest cave of Creswell Crags. It was so exciting to walk through history as we set foot inside the home of ancient people and ferocious beasts. We got to see the sights they would have seen and the tools they made and used. We were even brave enough to go into the darkest depths of the cave and turn our head torches off.

Overall we had a fantastic day. We learnt so much about the Stone Age and we cannot wait to include all this information in our next piece of writing.

Science

Today in Science we took part in four different activities. The first activity was a computer based activity where we had to use different research skills to identify the features of granite, clay and marble. For the second activity we used different books to find new information out about rocks. The third activity was based on permeability and durability. We had to use pipettes to test if water passes through the rocks. Finally, we took part in a density activity where we had to test the buoyancy of different rocks to find out how dense they were.

Art

This week in art we have been looking at different cave paintings and symbols they used to display messages. We then had a go at creating our own cave paintings using different symbols. We also spoke about how they had to use the sun to know when the day had ended so we decided to  paint different sun sets.

History

This week in History we have been introduced to our new topic 'Stone Age'. We have been using different research skills to investigate the clothing they wore, the food they ate and the different shelter they built. We then had to present this information to the rest of the class.
