# Autumn Term

Autumn Term

Click on the links below to see our learning from this term:

Enquiry Questions:

Evacuee Experiences in Britain: Is this all we need to know about children in WWII?

Should animals be involved in conflict?

Focus Texts:

English:

In Autumn Term 1, we will be using the focus text, 'Letters from the Lighthouse' to inspire our own letter writing and to prompt discussion around the question: Was it right to evacuate? In Autumn Term 2, we will be writing an alternative ending to the novel 'War Horse' and creating a non-chronological report about World War I and World War II.

Maths:

This term, we will be recapping our understanding of place value and revising strategies to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. As well as this, we will be developing our understanding of fractions and learning about position and direction.

Science - Light and Electricity:

In Autumn Term 1, we will begin to understand how we see things and we will explore why shadows have the same shape as the objects. In Autumn Term 2, we will create our own electrical circuits and use symbols to draw a simple circuit diagram.

History and Geography - During the War...

In our history lessons, we will be asking historically valid questions such as, 'What was it like during an air raid?' and 'Did men and women contribute equally to WWII?' We will be exploring the effect of war on the local area and discussing the impact of the Holocaust. In our geography lessons, we will be locating countries involved in World War Two on a map and discovering how bombing raids during WWII changed landscapes in Britain.

SMSC:

'Aiming High' and 'Teamwork' are our two themes for the Autumn Term. In Autumn Term 1, we will be setting ourselves targets for the new academic year and we will be discussing what makes a positive learner. In Autumn Term 2, we will be thinking about what makes a good team.

RE:

In Autumn Term 1, we will be learning about Judaism and in Autumn Term 2, we will be learning about Christianity with a focus on Christmas and the Pentecost.

PSHE:

'Living in the Wider World' is the theme for our learning this term. We will begin to recognise the importance of human rights and we will understand what it means to be part of a community.

Art and Design:

In Autumn Term 1, we will be creating a mixed-media landscape piece based on the view from the trenches. In Autumn Term 2, we will be completing an observational drawing of the poppies found in Flanders Field.

Design Technology:

This term, we will be working together to construct an Anderson shelter that could be used by civilians during World War II.

Music:

Linked to our history learning, we will be discussing how WWII affected the way people experienced music. In our music lessons, we will learn how to read sheet music and compose a melody to fit a style of music.

Computing:

The focus for our learning this term is 'Online Safety'.

French:

In our weekly lessons with Madame Walsh, we will be learning how to respond to classroom requests and identifying differences in the UK and France.

PE:

Mr Scott will continue to teach us PE. In Autumn Term 1, we will be developing our fundamental skills, such as throwing and catching. In Autumn Term 2, we will be playing different invasion games and learning how to work as a team.
